Untracked snow, no lift lines, and a fun, safe day with friends is what we’re looking for in backcountry skiing. Backcountry skiing–hiking up the mountain to ski down–is a challenging but rewarding way to experience the mountains in the winter. Designed for the first time backcountry skier or snowboarder, this class will introduce you to the fundamentals of the sport. We will meet two evenings in Outdoor Pursuits and two full days in the field. The class sessions will cover trip preparations and introduce avalanche safety concepts. Day one in the field we will get comfortable with the equipment and its use and day two will be an avalanche awareness clinic with a short tour. Participants should ski or snowboard at an intermediate level and be comfortable with moderate to strenuous exercise. No equipment? No problem. Outdoor Pursuits has a full line of backcountry ski and snowboard equipment available for rent to students and community members alike. For more information, contact Jacob Rothrock at
